A Peace that Endures

Peace is a gift of God and the peace which flows from God surpasses all understanding.  It transcends every trial and hurt and abuse and abandonment; it is a peace, as Chisholm says, "that endureth."  The Peace that we receive from the gracious mercies of the Father is the Son Himself - it is Christ who is our peace.  Paul said of Jesus, "For he himself is our peace. . . . "  Jesus said, in Johns Gospel, on the very night of His betrayal, "These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace.  In the world you have tribulation, but take courage, I have overcome the world."

Take careful note however of what exactly Jesus said.  This peace is not based upon the absence of trial and tribulation in the world.  These we will have, even in our redemption and salvation.  But it is a peace that rises above every dark night and fiery trial, because Jesus Himself has arisen out of and above the greatest of threats to our peace, death itself!

So we can have this peace.  In the midst of our greatest difficulty and hurt, it is present.  It is present, because our Peace is Christ, and Christ abides with every Child of God, called and saved according to His will and purposes.  It IS a peace that endures.  It IS a peace that passes understanding.
